Symptoms of depression:

  • Loss of pleasure or interest
  • Change in eating or sleeping habits
  • Difficulty in concentrating
  • Persistent sadness or depressed mood
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Slowed movements or restlessness
  • Fatigue or decreased energy
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
  • Anxiety or irritability
  • Mood swings

Ways depression manifests itself in the workplace:

  • Decreased productivity
  • Morale problems
  • Lack of cooperation
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Unexplained aches/pains
  • Safety problems and accidents
  • Excessive absenteeism
  • Abuse of alcohol and/or other drugs

Facts about depression:

  • 10 to 25 percent of people experience depression.
  • 70 to 90 percent who experience an episode of severe depression will experience it again.
  • Depression can be a fatal illness.
  • Treatment of depression usually involves some form of psychotherapy and medication.
  • 90 percent of those treated for depression are successful.
  • Medications generally take two to three weeks to begin working.
